In this tough economy, it is very hard to get promoted. You must use every method that you can think of in order to get ahead. So how do you get promoted? How do you make sure that you are not passed up on your next job? What things should you be doing in order to set yourself up to get that next raise or promotion?

First, sit down and talk to your boss about your current work. Have you reviewed your project and ask him what he is looking for. Also, try to ask him what he thinks you should do better. Ask him about your work and get his feedback as much as possible. Knowing and understanding what your boss thinks is very important to getting promoted. Knowing that he wants you to do more and be more analytical will help you focus on the areas that you are weaker in.

Second, try getting feedback from your coworkers. An important area to get extra help from is your coworkers. They can tell you what they think your boss like and what they think your boss dislikes. Also, they might be able to tell you insights that you didn’t learn yourself. Sharing information with them is the best way for you all to understand what is needed for everyone to get ahead.

Third, try to take on a new project. Doing something you will help show that you are very well-rounded. It will also help your boss to see that he can give you new responsibilities and does not have to worry about whether or not you can do the. You want to show your boss that you are a great manager. You want to show your boss that you can take on big projects. When you take on a new project look for something that is impactful. Don’t take on something that is small. Also, don’t take on projects that don’t have anything to do with the company’s bottom line. You want to show your boss that you take part in the company projects that will bring in revenue. You want to show your boss that you are important to the company.

Fourth, get involved with the company. People like to promote others that are very involved with the company. People like to promote people that know a lot of other people in the company. Volunteer at your next company affair. Go and work with other teams. Try to take on extra items that people don’t want to do so you can shine. Getting involved with the company and showing that you are a team player will help your posse that promoting you will be a good thing for him as well.

You must work smarter not harder in order to get promoted these days. Think through all of these things and make sure you are tackling the right project at work. Getting promoted is difficult, but you can do with a little hard work and a lot of thought.
